The challenge:<\/strong> The support steelwork of the west boiler access shaft (BAS) at EDF Heysham 1 nuclear power station faced severe corrosion. A targeted maintenance program was initiated to replace irreparable steelwork and recoat the remaining sections to halt further deterioration. The remaining steel required grit blasting surface preparation to ensure proper coating adhesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the west BAS’s proximity to the reactor building presented a significant challenge. Traditional blasting methods risked airborne grit triggering smoke detectors and contaminating reactor air intakes, even with containment measures such as habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
