ATEX Zone 1
ATEX Zone 1 is an area where an explosive atmosphere with flammable gases, vapors or mists is likely to occur during normal operations. Equipment used in these zones must be ATEX-certified to avoid ignition risks.
When is ATEX Zone 1 relevant?
You encounter ATEX Zone 1 in many industrial environments:
- Oil & Gas – around pumps, compressors, process units.
- Petrochemical plants – near reactors, distillation towers and storage tanks.
- Marine & Offshore – confined spaces on drilling rigs or FPSOs.
- Energy production – gas turbines and biomass plants with volatile atmospheres.
For you as a maintenance or HSE manager, this means any tool you use must be ATEX Zone 1 certified. Using uncertified equipment can create sparks or heat that trigger explosions.
Extra explanation / deep dive
ATEX zones are defined by the EU to classify areas with explosion hazards:
- Zone 0 – explosive atmosphere continuously present.
- Zone 1 – explosive atmosphere likely to occur in normal operation.
- Zone 2 – explosive atmosphere unlikely or short-lived.
Pinovo’s vacuum blasting systems are fully ATEX Zone 1 certified, meaning:
- Pneumatic drive – no electrical ignition source.
- No dust clouds – blasting debris is immediately vacuumed.
- Safe in explosive environments – enables coating removal without full shutdown.
- Compliance with HSE – ensures your operations meet EU directives and corporate safety standards.
