Sa 2½ Surface Cleanliness
Sa 2½ is a surface preparation grade defined by ISO 8501-1 and refers to a very thorough abrasive blast cleaning of steel surfaces. After blasting, almost all visible contaminants such as rust, mill scale, old coatings, and foreign matter must be removed, leaving the surface nearly metallic clean.
Where is Sa 2½ used?
Sa 2½ is the most commonly specified blast cleanliness standard for:
- Oil & Gas – pipelines, storage tanks, and offshore structures.
- Chemical & Petrochemical – vessels, reactors, and piping systems.
- Marine & Offshore Wind – ship hulls, offshore substations, and steel decks.
- Infrastructure – bridges, cranes, and heavy steel structures.
For you as an asset owner or contractor, achieving Sa 2½ ensures that protective coatings achieve optimal adhesion and provide long-term corrosion protection.
Extra explanation and standards
The ISO 8501-1 standard defines four primary blast cleaning grades:
- Sa 1 – light blast cleaning.
- Sa 2 – thorough blast cleaning.
- Sa 2½ – very thorough blast cleaning.
- Sa 3 – blast cleaning to visually clean steel.
Sa 2½ requires:
- At least 95% of the surface to be free from visible oil, rust, mill scale, coatings, and other contaminants.
- Only slight shadows or minor discoloration may remain.
- The prepared surface must have a uniform metallic appearance.
Compliance with Sa 2½ is critical for coating performance and is commonly required by standards such as NORSOK, ISO, and SSPC.
Pinovo and Sa 2½
Pinovo’s dust-free vacuum blasting technology can achieve Sa 2½ while ensuring:
- No dust emissions – improving safety for workers and nearby work teams.
- ATEX compliance – safe operation in hazardous environments.
- Consistent surface quality – delivering a uniform surface profile for optimal coating adhesion.
- Environmental protection – preventing the release of microplastics and abrasive media.
