Can a prepared surface be left for too long?

Good surface preparation forms the basis of a durable coating system. But what happens after a steel surface has been blasted and the required surface profile has been achieved? Can you simply wait before applying the coating?

In practice, the answer is: not indefinitely. From the moment the surface has been prepared, environmental conditions can begin to change its condition again. Moisture, dust, salts and other contaminants can mean that a properly prepared surface is no longer suitable for immediate coating.

In this article, we explain why the time between surface preparation and coating matters, which factors play a role and when a surface needs to be inspected or prepared again.

What is a prepared surface?

During surface preparation, a substrate is made suitable for the application of a new coating. For steel, this is often done by abrasive blasting.

During blasting, for example, old coating, corrosion and other contaminants are removed. At the same time, a specific surface profile is created. This profile provides the coating with sufficient anchorage to the steel.

A properly prepared surface must therefore not only be sufficiently clean, but must also meet the requirements specified for the selected coating system.

Why can’t a prepared surface be left indefinitely?

Immediately after blasting, bare steel is once again exposed to its surroundings. From that moment on, the condition of the surface can change.

One of the main risks is renewed rust formation. When steel is exposed to moisture and oxygen, corrosion can start again. Under unfavourable conditions, this can happen relatively quickly.

But visible rust is not the only issue. A surface can also become recontaminated by, for example:

  • Dust from nearby work
  • Moisture or condensation
  • Oil or grease
  • Salts
  • Touching or other contact with the surface

A surface that met the requirements immediately after blasting does not automatically still meet them if the coating is applied later.

How long can you wait between blasting and coating?

There is no universal number of hours.

How long a prepared surface remains suitable for coating depends, among other things, on:

  • The temperature of the steel
  • Relative humidity
  • The dew point
  • The working environment
  • The presence of contaminants
  • The coating system being used
  • The requirements of the coating specification

The key question is therefore not simply: within how many hours must the coating be applied?

The more important question is: does the surface still meet the specified requirements at the time of coating?

Temperature, humidity and dew point

Environmental conditions play an important role in the period between surface preparation and coating.

The dew point is particularly important. If the steel temperature gets too close to the dew point, condensation can form on the surface. Even when the steel appears dry, humid conditions can increase the risk of corrosion.

This is why steel temperature, ambient temperature and relative humidity are typically monitored during industrial coating work.

So it is not only about the amount of time that has passed. A surface left for several hours under well-controlled conditions may be in a different state from a surface exposed for a much shorter time to humid or contaminated conditions.

What happens if you wait too long?

If the condition of the surface deteriorates, this can affect the final coating.

New corrosion

Bare steel can oxidise again. Once rust begins to form, it may be necessary to prepare the surface again before the coating is applied.

Recontamination

Dust, salts, oil and other contaminants can settle on the surface again. This can affect the adhesion and performance of the coating system.

Additional work

If the surface no longer meets the required condition, further cleaning or blasting may be necessary. This wastes both time and the work already carried out.

Reduced service life of the coating system

The performance of a coating depends in part on the substrate to which it is applied. Applying a coating to a surface that no longer meets the specifications can ultimately lead to premature coating failure.

How do you prevent a prepared surface from being left too long?

Good coordination of surface preparation and coating is therefore essential.

Step 1: Coordinate blasting and coating

Do not prepare significantly more surface area than can be properly inspected and coated under the available conditions.

Step 2: Monitor the environmental conditions

Monitor temperature, relative humidity and dew point, among other factors. Conditions can change throughout the working day.

Step 3: Protect the prepared surface

Where possible, prevent dust, moisture, oil or other contaminants from settling on the blasted surface again.

Step 4: Inspect before coating

Do not automatically assume that a previously accepted surface is still suitable. Inspect the condition again before applying the coating.

Step 5: Prepare the surface again when necessary

Has new rust or contamination developed, or does the surface no longer meet the specified cleanliness requirements? Then the surface must first be restored to the required condition before coating can continue.

What role does vacuum blasting play?

Conventional open blasting releases abrasive media, coating residues and dust into the work environment. This can affect not only the surrounding area, but also surfaces that have already been prepared.

With vacuum blasting, the abrasive media, removed coating and dust are extracted directly at the blast head. This greatly limits the amount of loose abrasive media and dust released into the surrounding area.

This can be particularly useful when surface preparation is carried out in stages or when other work is taking place close to the prepared surface.

However, this does not change the basic principle: a vacuum-blasted surface must also meet the required surface condition before the coating is applied.

Common mistakes with prepared surfaces

In practice, several common mistakes are relatively easy to avoid:

  • Looking only at elapsed time rather than the actual surface condition.
  • Failing to account for changes in humidity and temperature.
  • Leaving a prepared surface exposed to the environment for unnecessarily long periods.
  • Assuming a surface is clean because no visible rust is present.
  • Planning blasting and coating as two separate activities.
  • Failing to reinspect a surface after a long interruption.

Good surface preparation therefore does not end when blasting is complete. The surface must remain in the correct condition until the coating is actually applied.

A good coating starts with the right timing

Can a prepared surface be left for too long? Yes. But there is no general time limit that applies to every situation.

The conditions, coating system and project specifications determine how soon the coating must be applied after surface preparation. The most important point is that the surface still meets the specified requirements at the time of coating.
