ATEX-Zone 1

ATEX Zone 1 is an area where an explosive atmosphere consisting of flammable gases, vapors, or mists is likely to occur during normal operations. Equipment used in these areas must be ATEX-certified to avoid ignition risks.

Where does ATEX Zone 1 occur?

ATEX Zone 1 is found in many industrial environments, including:

  • Oil & Gas facilities – around pumps, compressors, and process equipment.
  • Petrochemical plants – near reactors, distillation columns, and storage tanks.
  • Marine & Offshore applications – confined spaces on drilling rigs or FPSOs.
  • Power generation facilities – around gas turbines and biomass plants with explosive atmospheres.

For you as a maintenance or HSE manager, this means that all tools used must be approved for ATEX Zone 1. Non-certified equipment can generate sparks or heat and potentially trigger explosions.

Extra explanation

The ATEX Directive defines hazardous areas as follows:

  • Zone 0 – explosive atmosphere present continuously.
  • Zone 1 – explosive atmosphere likely to occur during normal operations.
  • Zone 2 – explosive atmosphere occurs rarely or only for short periods.

Pinovo’s vacuum blasting systems are fully certified for ATEX Zone 1. This means:

  • Pneumatic drive – no electrical ignition sources.
  • No dust clouds – blasting debris is captured immediately.
  • Safe in hazardous environments – coating removal without a full plant shutdown.
  • HSE compliance – supports compliance with European directives and corporate safety standards.

Products for ATEX Zone 1

  • PiSys™ Vacuum Blasting Machine – the core system certified for ATEX Zone 1.
  • PiWalk™ – for larger surfaces in hazardous environments.
  • PiPoint™  – spot blasting tool for CUI areas and local touch-up work in ATEX zones.
  • PiCo Pipe™ – pipeline blasting solution for Zone 1 environments.
  • PiHab™ – containment solution for rope access work in explosive atmospheres.
