ATEX Zone 2

ATEX Zone 2 is an area where an explosive atmosphere consisting of flammable gases, vapors, or mists is not likely to occur during normal operations, and if it does occur, it will only exist for a short period of time. Equipment used in these areas must still be ATEX-certified, although the requirements are less stringent than for Zone 1.

When is ATEX Zone 2 relevant?

ATEX Zone 2 is commonly found in industrial environments where explosive atmospheres occur occasionally or under abnormal conditions, such as:

  • Oil & Gas facilities – near tank farms or secondary containment areas.
  • Chemical & Petrochemical plants – storage and transfer zones with limited vapor release.
  • Marine & Offshore – engine rooms or areas with intermittent vapor presence.
  • Power generation – biomass plants or gas facilities where explosive atmospheres are infrequent.

For you as an operator or maintenance planner, ATEX Zone 2 means that blasting or coating removal can still be carried out, provided certified equipment is used that prevents sparks, dust clouds, and static buildup.

Extra explanation

The ATEX Directive divides hazardous gas areas into three zones:

  • Zone 0 – explosive atmosphere present continuously.
  • Zone 1 – explosive atmosphere likely to occur during normal operations.
  • Zone 2 – explosive atmosphere unlikely, but possible under abnormal conditions.

Pinovo’s vacuum blasting technology is suitable for ATEX Zone 2 work and offers:

  • Dust-free blasting – no uncontrolled emissions of flammable dust or paint debris.
  • Reduced risk – pneumatic drive eliminates ignition sources.
  • Operational flexibility – allows blasting near live equipment without a full shutdown.
  • Sustainability – captures and recycles abrasive media, reducing waste.

Products for ATEX Zone 2

  • PiSys™ – vacuum blasting machine suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2.
  • PiWalk™ – for large flat or curved surfaces.
  • PiPoint™ – spot blasting in areas with limited risk.
  • PiCo Pipe™ – pipeline blasting in secondary hazardous zones.
