Intrinsic Safety

Intrinsic Safety (IS) is a design principle used for equipment in explosive atmospheres. It ensures that the energy levels inside the equipment are too low to ignite gases, vapors, or dust.

When is Intrinsic Safety relevant?

You encounter Intrinsic Safety requirements mainly in ATEX Zone 0 areas, where explosive atmospheres are continuously present. Here, only intrinsically safe equipment can be used, such as measuring instruments, sensors, or communication devices.

For you as a safety officer, this means that blasting or grinding tools are not allowed in Zone 0, but intrinsic safety is a key concept to understand when evaluating equipment certifications.

Extra explanation / deep dive

Intrinsic Safety works by limiting:

  • Electrical energy – circuits designed to prevent sparks.
  • Heat generation – components cannot reach ignition temperature.
  • Stored energy – capacitance and inductance reduced to safe levels.

Pinovo’s vacuum blasting systems are not for ATEX Zone 0, but are certified for ATEX Zone 1, where explosive atmospheres occur intermittently. By using pneumatic power and vacuum containment, Pinovo ensures safety without relying on intrinsic safety principles.

Relation to Pinovo

  • Pinovo tools operate safely in Zone 1 thanks to ATEX Certification.
  • For Zone 0, blasting is not feasible – but Pinovo supports safe maintenance around Zone 0 areas (e.g. tank exteriors, reactor shells).
  • Understanding Intrinsic Safety helps you see why Pinovo’s pneumatic design is the right choice for explosive zones.
