ATEX Zone 2

ATEX Zone 2 is an area where an explosive atmosphere with flammable gases, vapors or mists is not likely to occur in normal operation, and if it does, it only lasts for a short time. Equipment in these zones must still be ATEX-certified, but the requirements are less strict than for Zone 1.

When is ATEX Zone 2 relevant?

You find ATEX Zone 2 in industrial environments where flammable atmospheres occur occasionally or abnormally, for example:

  • Oil & Gas facilities – near tank farms or secondary containment areas.
  • Chemical & Petrochemical plants – storage and transfer zones with limited vapor release.
  • Marine & Offshore – engine rooms or areas with intermittent vapor presence.
  • Energy generation – biomass plants or gas facilities where explosive atmospheres are infrequent.

For you as an operator or maintenance planner, ATEX Zone 2 means you can still carry out blasting or coating removal, but only with certified equipment that guarantees no sparks, dust clouds or static buildup.

Extra explanation / deep dive

The ATEX directive divides hazardous areas into three gas zones:

  • Zone 0 – continuous presence of explosive atmosphere.
  • Zone 1 – likely presence during normal operations.
  • Zone 2 – unlikely, but possible under abnormal conditions.

Pinovo’s vacuum blasting technology is also suitable for Zone 2 work, offering:

  • Dust-free blasting – no uncontrolled emissions of flammable dust or paint debris.
  • Reduced risk – pneumatic drive eliminates ignition sources.
  • Operational flexibility – allows blasting near live equipment without full shutdown.
  • Sustainability – captures and recycles abrasive media, reducing waste.

Products with ATEX Zone 2

  • PiSys™ – vacuum blasting machine, safe for Zone 1 & 2.
  • PiWalk™ – for large flat or curved surfaces.
  • PiPoint™ – spot blasting in areas with limited risk.
  • PiCo Pipe™ – pipeline blasting in secondary hazardous zones.
