Micron Surface Profile

micron surface profile, also known as surface roughness, is the average depth between profile peaks and valleys created on a steel surface during abrasive blasting. It is measured in microns (µm) and determines how well a protective coating can adhere to the substrate.

Where is surface profile important?

A specified micron surface profile is required wherever steel is prepared for coating applications, including:

  • Oil & Gas – pipelines, storage tanks, and offshore platforms.
  • Petrochemical & Chemical – reactors, vessels, and process piping.
  • Marine & Offshore Wind – ship hulls, deck areas, and offshore substations.

For you as an asset owner or inspector, achieving the correct surface profile is critical. If the profile is too low, the coating may not adhere properly. If it is too high, air entrapment may occur or the coating system’s service life may be reduced.
