Pitting Corrosion

Pitting corrosion (also known as pit corrosion) is a highly localized form of corrosion that creates small holes or cavities in a metal surface. Although the damage may appear minor on the surface, pits can penetrate deep into the material and significantly compromise structural integrity.

Where does pitting corrosion occur?

Pitting corrosion commonly occurs in:

• Marine & Offshore Wind – submerged hull sections, ballast tanks, and offshore substations.
• Oil & Gas – pipelines, storage tanks, and offshore structures.
• Petrochemical & Chemical – vessels and process equipment.

Pinovo’s role in pitting corrosion

• Removal of coatings and corrosion products from affected areas.
• Exposure of corrosion sites for inspection (NDT and visual inspection).
• Surface preparation for protective coatings or composite repair systems.

Pinovo does not repair pitting corrosion itself, but ensures that affected areas are properly exposed and prepared for long-term protection measures such as coatings or repair systems (e.g. composite repairs).
